Re: Flattening a face

If you want to augment a (modified) stellated dodecahedron with a tetrahedron, I think this is only possible with the great stellated dodecahedron where you cut off a piece of one spike. Then you have a new face formed like an equilateral triangle and you can augment it with a tetrahedron.

There is another way to create those models easily: You take the cuboctahedron and hit the "Morph duals by Expansion"-button All edges are replaced by quadrilaterals. You put the result into a Memory, retrieve it and activate the base model view again. Then you facet the squares, triangles and ...

Very nice! You can get it also by simply subdividing the faces of the rhombicuboctahedron. Then facet and make the faces as regular as can be. In the same way you can make a snub rhombicosidodecahedron:

You cannot upload pictures in this forum directly, you have to put a link to a file you uploaded to your website or to photobucket or something like that.
Before creating a new model from facetings make sure that you chose a layout with at least 2 windows (hit ctrl+2). Then you have the base model ...

You select the heptagrammic face, hit: scale->stretch (non-uniform scale)..., enter the desired value (scale by or set value to ...) and "perpendicular to selected face".

If you want to colour each spike of a shape like the great stellated dodecahedron individually you can open it in the base stellation view, put it into a memory, retrieve it again, activate the base polyhedron view and give each triangular face the colour you want by hitting Ctrl+c.

I'd call it a rhombic 180-hedron and I guess you'll have to do the colouring by hand using Ctrl+c.

When this model is opened in the library it is displayed in the base stellation view. So you can fix that colour problem easily by putting the model into a memory, retrieving it again and activating the base view. Then you can select the inner parts and give them a different colour by using shift c ...

If you allow a pentagon and a triangle to share the same colour at one vertex, you get along with four colours:
