Another idea would be to make a 'duplicate object by rotation about the center' feature - for example: Lets say you wanted to make a compound of 5 icoes - start with ico (vertex centered), (rotate xy 36 degrees rotate zw 36 degrees) duplicate ico, (rotate xy and zw another 36 degrees) duplicate ico ...

One feature I would like to see added is the ability to generate a convex polychoron, by using only the vertices - sort of a convex hull feature.

Ah, this is already possible! Just select "Poly->Create Convex Hull" from the menu with a 4D polytope loaded.
