Nice. Will you be making one from paper?

Yep, you can scale models before putting them in memory, or before adding the other one from memory, using any (well most) of the items on the Scale menu. These allow you to set the size of the model by specifying the radius, edge length, inradius, surface area, volume etc.

Nothing appears to ...

I mostly just use 120gsm paper. Thin enough for accurate results, but still pretty sturdy once a model is completed.

I have heaps of dead CDs around, but haven't really tried making anything with them. Ideally I'd like to be able to cut them up, but not sure how to do that without the coating ...

That error occurs during the stellation process (possibly via trying to show nets). It probably means the model being imported does not have sufficient accuracy. Stella requires double-precision floating-point accuracy. I don't know what javaview does, but if there's a way to export with 15 or more ...

Hey, sorry about this, but it looks like you have indeed found a bug! I looked a bit closer and you're right. It seems the triangles surrounding each vertex are correct, but some of the smaller triangles hanging off them have their colours swapped around. I'm surprised no one came across this before ...

I just tried it, and it seems to work for me. You're using a colour printer I take it to colour in the faces? (I mostly use coloured paper and just print the outlines). When I tell it to mix colours, each copy of the net is correctly getting a different arrangement of colours. Are you not seeing ...

I used CamStudio, an open source screen video capture program.

http://camstudio.org/

I don't suggest the "stable" 2.0 version, which is very old now and has problems. Rather download the latest beta version (2.6 as of this writing).

I just thought of a partial answer for your original question.

Start with the snub dodecahedron.
Color -> Special Color Arrangements -> Icosahedral Arrangement 1
This colours the icosahedral faces, but leaves all the snub faces yellow.
Select a yellow face.
Color -> Take Color from ...

Yeah, I'd be interested to hear what you did. Some day I'll make a vertex-only connected model, but haven't tried it so far. Did you follow Wenninger's instructions from Polyhedron Models maybe? I think if I ever attempt one, I may thread fishing line or other thread through the connected vertices ...

I agree that paper models are ultimately the best, but they do take longer to make of course.

And yes, I used Stella to create the model in my avatar and print its nets. Read about that model here:

There are quite a few similar products around. The only ones I've had direct contact with are GeoShapes, aka GeoAustralia, and GeoMag. The former snaps together while the latter is magnetic. Both have hollow transparent faces with panels that fit in, which makes them a bit different from Polydron ...

I've been thinking of trying my hand at making a video tutorial for a while. This seemed like a good example, so I made a video! I started a new thread to announce/discuss it, so please comment there. http://software3d.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?p=877

Thanks,

Video showing how to replace each part of a compound.

Hi guys,

I just made my first video tutorial about Stella. You can see it here: http://www.software3d.com/TuteNewCompounds.php

It's not really a beginner's tutorial. I should make some introductory ones sometime. This one shows a way to replace each part of a compound with a different shape.

Let ...

I think you can do this already as follows:

Use "Poly->Keep One Part of Compound" (or Ctrl+K) to separate out one part of a compound
Put it in a memory slot ("Edit->Put in Memory" or "m1")
Do whatever editing you want
Add the result to the unedited item in memory ("Edit->Add/Blend from Memory ...
