Re: edge stellation
i would like to have an option to make edge stellations of an polyhedron
that would include
- extend all (or some selection of) edges (don't think stella has an option for this. please tell me i am wrong)
Maybe someday. Edge stellations should presumably include all polyhedra with edges in ...

Re: 132-faced all-pentagon polyhedron
Thanks, and you're welcome.
And I just realised up to step 4 can be done much more easily by just starting with a rhombic triacontahedron, dual of the icosidodecahedron. Subdivide to level 6 and you can facet directly from there without even truncating the corners first.

Re: 132-faced all-pentagon polyhedron
By the way, don't know if you've seen my MineSweeper3D game, but for N-gons with N >= 5 I subdivide the faces using pentgagons in a similar way. There's one N-gon left in the centre and the rest are pentagons (all pentagons when N = 5).
This image shows 2 levels of subdivision.

Re: 132-faced all-pentagon polyhedron
Yep getting all the pentagons planar will be an issue. Might be easier to aim for creating the dual instead, which will be mostly triangles with a few quads. Easier to keep them planar then.

Re: Millers rules (again)
Not sure what count you're referring to. You mean on my webpage with stellation counts for various polyhedra? There are usually trillions, so listing them is not so practical. Or are you referring to individual stellation cells?

Re: Millers rules (again)
No, I think he's referring to the example on my page about Miller's Rules, not the icosahedron.guy wrote: Fri Jul 11, 2025 3:34 pmI think you are confusing 2D faces with 3D cells. For example cells c have handed faces but there is only one type of c cell.

Re: Millers rules (again)
The "just one case" comment only applies to stellations of the icosahedron. All the interpretations I know of satisfy that for the icosahedron, but differ for other polyhedra. The icosahedron has only one chiral cell, and the "just one case" refers to a stellation consisting of both left and right ...

Re: Making skeleton models
Hmm, there's two websites in the video, near the start and a different one at the end, and neither work. Looks like he hasn't posted anything on YouTube for 11 years (but hey, it's been 11 years since the last Stella and I'm still planning a new version sometime!).

Re: Millers rules (again)
Miller was trying to reduce the set to something manageable, and I suppose reduce the number of impracticle polyhedra. Sure, you could allow all possible combinations of cells, and you'd get 2^N - 1 stellations, for N cells (presuming we skip the empty stellation with no cells selected), so it ...

I'm not familiar with them, but their website makes it look like they're still active.

Personally I prefer kits that have face panels as well.
I've used Geomag before, and Stella even has a Geomag rendering mode.

Making the Herschel enneahedron
Saw the Numberphile video about the Herschel enneahedron and thought I'd make one in Stella.

Turned out to be pretty easy. Here are the steps.

Re: Coloring of Archimedean solids
Ah sorry, I see. Hmm, is it important? I'm not sure why it ends up different, just something being done in a different order, but it does end up with a valid colouring. There's nothing really "correct" about the original colouring. When changing back to the original symmetry, it's kind of free to ...

Re: Coloring of Archimedean solids
Nope, not a mistake. The model is recoloured according to the new symmetry. It means that under tetrahedral symmetry, not all squares can be transformed to align with all the other squares.
If you want to maintain the initial colouring though, you can disable "Options->Recolor Sub-symmetries ...

Re: Transparent backgrounds in exported images
Nope, no list yet. One of the boring admin things I still need to work on will be a list of updates, as well as the documentation, website etc. Yes there's lots of changes, but a lot of time was spent fixing bugs and getting it working with the latest dev tools (the last version was built using dev ...

Re: Better Navigation
It's a good idea, but I probably won't get it done before the next release. Maybe a minor release after that.
I imagine fly mode and rotate-around-camera mode would go together wouldn't they? One toggle would change both?
